  • Bio

The Hook Up is a three-piece rock band focused around the guitar and songwriting talents of David Ian Gilbert and singer/bass player Jaime Haraldson. Their sound plays with and across genres, taking what they like from garage, punk, country, soul, blues and surf. It is American roots music in the most broad, all-encompassing way possible. David came of age in the London, Ont. punk scene and c...ut his teeth on the road with garage outfit The Cutouts in the early 2000's. Jaime grew up in Northern Saskatchewan singing in her car on the long drives between towns. The two met in 2009 on Bishop street in Montreal in the midst of a thriving alt-country scene and after numerous drinks, some questionable Chinese tequila and an evening spent passing the guitar back and forth they decided three things: they should get married, they should start a band and that band should be electric, amplified, reverb-drenched, dirty rock n roll. They promptly did all three and became the black sheep of the scene that was characterized by singer-songwriters and acoustic folk bands. They were joined initially by drummer Josh Peters whose heavy hitting style drives the first album "Tomorrow and Today" (Ricochet Sound). Channeling the stooges, the MC5 and the glory days of American Rock n Roll the album put them on the garage-punk map. Followed closely with a track on the Garage-Punk Hideout compilation "Noises from the Hideout Volume 6". It wasn't long before the garage-punk label became limiting. Shortly after releasing "Tomorrow and Today" the trio set about recording "Call Up the Devil". The album in many ways represents the band's coming of age. Decidedly less distorted and less "garage", The Devil marks a turning point in the band's sound and mission. Moving away from the Detroit garage sounds that characterized their first album, they turn their ears towards surf, blues, gospel and soul but give them the rough treatment and intensity they have come to be known for. It also marks a coming of age in their recording processes. "Tomorrow and Today" was recorded at House of Miracles in London, Ontario by the skilled ears of Andy McGoffin. "Call Up the Devil" was recorded on a digital 8 track run through an old Traynor mixer in a rundown rehearsal space in Montreal. Part way through Josh Peters left the band to live his life and get married. He was replaced by the impeccable Ryan Benty. "Call Up the Devil" will be officially released in August 2012 by the Soledad Recording Co., followed with a 16 date Montreal to Calgary and everywhere in between tour. Hundreds of shows and thousands of kilometres later The Hook Up have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, consistently delivering, living and loving the music that they play.
