  • Interview: K. Michelle speaks out

by Dan Hyman Jun 27, 2011 at 4:36 PM

    .
R&B newcomer K. Michelle, of bountiful blue hair, is prepping to release her debut album Pain Medicine, via Jive in the coming months. And for the singer, whose drawn comparisons to the big-time likes of Mary J. Blige and Keyshia Cole, the experience has been surreal. For one, the 25-year-old was able to meet her idol, R. Kelly. And, seeing as she claims her label signed her as “a female R. Kelly,” she was understandably a bit nervous. “I was shaking,” Cole admits in a recent interview with The Urban Daily. “But he was so … he was just cool. The first thing he asked me when he saw me was, “Are you a stripper?” Classic R. Kelly.
    .
In her sit-down with the popular urban music site, Michelle opened up about her supposed feud with Cole (“don’t know what her problem is with me, but I have no problem with her”), the pressure of dropping a killer debut album (“At this point I’m just getting my feet wet”) and how her forthcoming major-label debut is far from one-dimensional (“I’d like to say the album is about life, not about men”). • Katy Perry Set to Tie Michael Jackson's Milestone

Michael Jackson may always be the “King of Pop,” but Katy Perry may be entering the late singer’s kingdom. The pop star’s latest disc, Teenage Dream, features an endless string of hits, and if the album’s fifth single, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” hits the Number One spot, Perry will become the first female artist to ever have five Number One singles off one album, matching a record Michael Jackson set in the late eighties with his album Bad.
    .
Considering Perry’s newest single jumped 27 spots to the Number Four spot this week on the Billboard Hot 100, it seems as if this is a very realistic goal for the singer whose other Number One smashes from Teenage Dream include the title track, “California Gurls,” “Firework” and “E.T.”

  • Lil Wayne Won't Work With Justin Bieber

If you want an instant hit single, the easiest way to do it seems to be working with Lil Wayne. Collaborations with Weezy have helped the careers of everyone from Chris Brown to Nicki Minaj, but despite his persistent requests, it looks as if Justin Bieber is going to have to go it on his own for now.
    .
During a recent interview with XXL Magazine, Lil Wayne explained why he doesn’t want to work with Bieber. “That’s my little homie now. He texts me every night asking me to do [his] d— song.” He went on to say, “That’s my n—-, but I can’t do it. Like I said, I don’t want to f— his sh– up.” While we would love to see Bieber croon about Purple Drank, we can also understand why Weezy wouldn’t want to corrupt the teen sensation.
